CYO
Coming into the season I knew the team was pretty damn good & I was determined to dominate every game. With final scores such as 67-15, it seemed like a real goal.
Somewhere along the line I started looking at things a lot differently though.
Our 4th or 5th game of the year we went up against a pretty good team. The coach was chewing out his players, the crowd was heckling us, & I even had one of the home refs come after me & physically make contact. I had 2 choices after that day. I could either get way into this & sit there with my X’s & O’s coaching things up or have some fun with it.
I obviously decided to go the second route. Although it probably cost us a real chance of taking the championship, I would do it the same way again. My guys were so much fun to be around. The are all confident, laid back guys who have a good time all the time. They played exactly like that too. No matter who the opponent or what the score was, we all had fun with it.
One thing I am most proud of was that we never compromised our team. My team was one of the few that played all the players equal time. I also put a huge emphasis on sportsmanship. There were games we could have really run up the score & instead pulled the dogs off. We never got caught up in the trash talking & things like that. Overall I was impressed as hell with them.
As fun as all that was, my favorite part of the entire experience was that the coach gets to practice with the team. I love playing ball but it seems like it is hard getting people together to play. It was awesome hitting the floor every week & just having fun.
Anyway…I had a great team, met a lot more great people in the league, & had a blast doing it. I see myself getting into coaching high school sports down the line. It is such a good time. This summer I want to coach some rec league soccer so we will see how that goes. In addition, I am looking for an assistant coach for my CYO squad next year. Let me know if you are interested. Also, I’ll post a team pic when I get them developed…Peace…
