Milwaukee

Today I went on a field trip to Milwaukee. I was really excited to go having never really seeing Milwaukee. Just about everyone has the same perception of Milwaukee. Fun place to visit, would never want to live there, ever. You generally think of breweries & foundries. Sprinkle in the occasional ball game & concert & that is about it. The tour my professor brought us on really opened my eyes to anther side of the city I had no idea existed.

We 1st just wandered through the edge cities. It is really interesting to see what you are learning in the classroom applied 1st hand. Being a business major 1st I can appreciate the effective commercialization of an area, yet it is sickening to see how it is destroying any character our communities have.

We then went to UWM for lunch. We parked right in front of a house that held one of my favorite Milwaukee parties. That night, I had been walking along in a group when, all of a sudden, someone yelled my name. It was one of my employees, Jordan Hurst, up on a balcony. We went in & soon were partying on the balcony ourselves. Some dude brought out a fucking python or some sort of big ass snake (Things were very cloudy that night.). At the end of the night, a guy we were with ganked a hammer from the very same house (I would later receive the hammer as an X-mas gift from him.). Nearly everything was closed in the student union, including my favorite restaurant, the Gausthaus, weak. We collectively settled for Burger King & were soon back on the road again.

This is where the trip got really interesting. We went up to Brewer’s Hill to see gentrification in effect. The houses were beautiful & it was awesome to see how many different uses developers came up with for the old buildings. I love when historic & period building are reused & restored. Everything in today’s society is so freaking cookie cutter, it is nice to see something unique once & a while.

We then went down to the 3rd Ward. This is where my tour took a little detour. We split into 2 groups, 3 guys & 3 chicks. The guys took off for the river front. I love these types of neighborhoods but the 3 of us were freaking tried. I suggested we get a beer. Soon we were headed for the Milwaukee Ale House. The next hour of our foot tour was spent sitting in bar stools drinking micro brew. This is the tour we should have had anyway…I mean we are still in Milwaukee. J I enjoyed a few glasses of the Solomon Juneau Ale, delicious, & watched the 2000 MLB Home Run Derby on ESPN. It was a very enjoyable experience.

We soon had to head back to the van & caught enough plaques on the way back to cover our asses, thank god (The art of bullshitting is something I pride myself in.).

After a few more neighborhoods, we were off to a little Mexican restaurant, Tres Hermanos. It was awesome. I am generally a picky eater, but I have at least been making a big effort to try new things. I have no idea exactly what I ordered but I know it was #11 on the menu & I think it was called a Flauta. The plate was a freaking mound of delicious food. Mine was a 3 deep fried burrito like things filled with chicken. It had a side salad, rice w/carrots & corn mixed in, & refried beans. In any event, it was excellent. I loved it all (I didn’t even kill it with salt, I chose hot sauce.). I love little ethnic restaurants because you get new & awesome foods you would never normally have the opportunity to try.

After our professor got lost in the city (I guess I am not the only one... i.e. Detour.) we finally found 43 & were back to the SNC.

Last year when I went to Chicago, it opened my eyes to how nice a city can be. It is just so beautiful & there is so much to do & see. After this little trip, I am pretty sure I would like to live in the city for at least a couple years. I think it would be a great experience. I guess now I might have to look at trying Marquette for a semester, we’ll see. It would definitely be fun.

Anyway, lessons learned: Milwaukee is way cooler than I ever suspected, you just have to search a little bit. I have about 15 date ideas just from today. If I explored a little on my own, I bet I could find a bunch more. We’ll have to check that out soon.

Anyway… I wrote out about half of my Indy stories on my way back from Milwaukee. I’ll sit down one of these nights & type then out. It was an awesome weekend & there are a few good stories in there (& Danica kicked ass).. Until then…
